Professor Andrew Rhodes appointed as a Non-Executive Director at Croydon’s NHS Trust

An intensive care consultant with more than 30 years’ experience within the NHS has been appointed as a new Non-Executive Director at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust.

As a consultant and a professor in intensive care medicine and anaesthesia, Andrew Rhodes will take on the role of being the Trust’s university representative to oversee the highest standards of clinical education and training for the next generation of healthcare workers at Croydon University Hospital and NHS community services across the borough.

As a Non-Executive Director, Professor Rhodes will be responsible for challenging the Trust’s leadership team in decision making to ensure they are collectively accountable and focused on delivering excellent health and care for local people.

Andrew, who lives in Epsom, offers a wealth of experience and knowledge to support the Trust as it continues to transform its services in one of London's largest boroughs.

Andrew joins Croydon from St George's University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Andrew has held a number of leadership positions in the health service. These include previously being a Cheif Medical Officer for St George's, a Regional Clinical Director at NHS England and Improvement (London) for Critical Care and Diagnostics, Medical Director at South West London Acute Provider Collaborative and a Clincal Chair for the Humber Acute Services Review.

Professor Andrew Rhodes said,

"Croydon is caring for a 'city within a city,' with on of the largest and most diverse populations in London. The calibre and depth of clinical expertise we have in the borough reflects this, and I look forward to seeing the Trust grow in both acclaim and profile in training our doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals of the future."

Andrew trained in Medicine at St Georges University Hospital, qualifying in 1990 and has gained in-depth clinical experience throughout his career including Southampton General Hospital, St Helier Hospital, King’s College Hospital, and The Royal Brompton

He has also held national and international leadership roles, including being an elected Council member of the Faculty of Intensive Care Medicine (FICM) and a past president of the European Society of Intensive Care Medicine (ESICM).

In Croydon, he will be succeeding former Non-Executive Director, Mr Mike Bailey, who has stepped-down after more than seven years at the Trust.

Mike Bell, Chair at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said:

“I would like to thank Mike for his expert advice, insight and drive that he has given to Croydon. Mike has been part of our Trust since 2014 and we would like to wish him well as he retires after more four decades in the NHS. With Professor Rhodes as part of our team, I know that Mike can pass the baton in confidence and I look forward to our community seeing continued progress in us giving the best possible care for our patients and ongoing career development for our staff on the foundations of our improvement journey that Mike and our collective team in Croydon have built.”

Professor Rhodes has clinical research interests in the fields of surgery, sepsis, haemodynamics and outcomes related to Peri-operative and Intensive Care Medicine.
