New state-of-the-art Croydon dental unit opens following £750,000 refurbishment

Dental Unit Opening

06 April 2017

Dental patients at Croydon University Hospital now have access to state-of-the-art facilities thanks to a £750,000 refurbishment inspired by the vision of a former dental consultant, the late Mr Graham Gilmour.

The new unit at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust came about in response to feedback from dental patients and the local community as the previous facilities were over 25 years old and in desperate need of upgrading.

The team at the dental unit, which included Mr Gilmour, who worked as a Consultant in Restorative Dentistry at the hospital since 1988, campaigned for improved facilities for patients at the Trust. Sadly Mr Gilmour passed away after a short illness in January 2016.

However the hospital’s dental and senior management teams continued the vision and, following a £750,000 investment, the new area was recently completed and was officially opened by Mr Gilmour’s widow, Virginia, on Thursday 30 March.

The first patients have already been welcomed into the new Orthodontic and Restorative Dentistry unit, which is situated in a previously unused ward at Croydon University Hospital.

Patients at the brand new facility now have access to:

  • A spacious, comfortable treatment environment with eight private treatment rooms
  • State-of-the-art equipment including brand new operating microscopes and dental chairs
  • An all-digital department from entry to exit
  • Improved facilities to allow dentistry to be done under sedation.

The new unit aims to be a leading training centre for postgraduate dentistry in London and the South-East with junior trainees and higher specialist trainees already attending.

John Goulston, Chief Executive of Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said:

“Our brand new facilities mean we can provide state-of-the-art dental treatment for Croydon residents and those from further afield. We are delighted to be home to this superb new clinical unit, which will allow our patients to receive the very best Restorative and Orthodontic dental care.”

Mrs Virginia Gilmour, added:

“The new unit is a first class department and finally matches the first class dentistry that has always and will always be given here in Croydon.

“Graham would have been incredibly proud that the project he worked on for many years has come to fruition. I know he would feel very proud of the effort that everyone on the dental team has made and the support from the management team.

“I know that as an educator and a leader that he would be most proud of the training facility that is part of the unit here. That is his legacy, and we are very proud that this is an integral part of this hardworking unit.”

Matt Chia, Consultant Orthodontist and Clinical Lead for Orthodontics and Restorative Dentistry added:

"Having grown up in the local area, no more than 5 minutes away from this hospital, it gives me great personal satisfaction and pride to be a consultant at Croydon University Hospital....to be in an aspirational and evolving team, with this new modern contemporary unit, aiming for a digital entry to exit for our patients; striving to serve and provide the best dental care for the diverse and wide community of Croydon and further afield. I am honoured to be a small part of this."

Mr Roger Stanesby, a restorative dental patient at the new unit, commented:

“What a change to the old dental area, the new unit is large, light and airy, with a brand new corridor and pristine surgeries. The new surgery must be a godsend to the hospital dental team - they deserve it!”
