About us
The Pathology department includes the following specialties:
- Clinical haematology
- Blood transfusion
- Microbiology
- Cytopathology
- Histopathology / mortuary
- Clinical biochemistry
Please note the Cytogenetics service has relocated to the Royal Marsden Hospital.
The combined departments handle approximately 660,000 specimens a year. We perform over 600 types of test in-house and have a network of external laboratories to which more specialised tests can be sent. Our 24 hour consultant-led service is available to assist with interpretation of results, the selection of appropriate tests, clinical management and to deal with any difficulties that arise.
The Pathology department is committed to providing a service which is:

Pathology has recently undergone major new auto-analyser implementation. Blood Sciences have installed an integrated automated pre-analytical analyser to ensure continuity and improve the quality of the service.
Services provided
Pathology services laboratories are at the Mayday Road entrance of the Woodcroft wing.
All laboratories offer a routine service Monday to Friday from 7.30am to 4.45pm.
In addition, Haematology and Clinical Biochemistry offer a routine service from 8am - 8pm.
A 24 hour emergency service is offered by Haematology, Blood transfusion, Clinical Biochemistry and Microbiology.

Labelling of Samples
All samples must carry sufficient information for positive identification.
- Forename
- Surname
- One other identifier (date of birth or Patient ID (M000) number – NB: For blood transfusion samples both must be supplied)
- Signature
- Date and time of specimen
Exceptions/Special Cases
Gum Clinic
Identification via initials and GUM number (NB: Full patient identification required for blood transfusion requests).
A&E
Unknown A&E cases must state unknown male/female and the Patient ID number (M000 number). Samples without a Patient ID number will not be processed.
Specimens which do not meet these criteria may not be processed.
Quality Assurance
Quality assurance programmes are in operation to ensure satisfactory accuracy and precision of all tests.
