The conditions treated include:
- Indigestion
- Heartburn
- Peptic ulcer
- Irritable bowel syndrome
- Pancreatitis
- Coeliac disease
- Hepatitis
- Diarrhoea
Endoscopy
including diagnostic upper and lower gastrointestinal endoscopy, enteroscopy, therapeutic procedures including removal of polyps,dilatation of strictures, insertion of stents, insertion of feeding and gastrostomy tubes and removal of stones from the bile duct endoscopically (ERCP). We have a Specialist Registrar in gastroenterology available to do gastroscopy out of hours in theatres or intensive care unit.
Outpatients
We diagnose and treat a variety of conditions including inflammatory bowel disease, liver problems, bleeding from the gastrointestinal tract, upper gastrointestinal problems, functional bowel disorder, diarrhoea, constipation, pancreatic and gall bladder diseases, provide nutritional support. There are 6 outpatient clinics every week of which two are at Purley Memorial Hospital.
Multi-disciplinary team
All patient suspected to have serious diseases are discussed at the weekly multidisciplinary meeting. We work closely with Royal Marsden Hospital and Kings College Hospital. The gastroenterology department is supported by excellent pathology, microbiology and radiology services. We have dieticians on site for specialist advice on nutritional problems.
Inpatients
The Gastroenterology team is part of the Medical on call and accepts patients with various medical disorders. We aim to get patients with gastroenterology problems transferred to Purley 1, the specialist ward. However we do provide consultations on other wards at Croydon University Hospital. There are various allied healthcare professionals including dietecians, pharmacist, physiotherapists, occupational therapist, social workers and others who are responsible for providing care for patients on the wards.

Events
An IBD evening is taking place at Croydon University Hospital on Thursday 28th Feb 2019 from 6:00pm until 8:30pm
The engagement and learning event will bring together patients, experienced staff and local groups to learn more about managing IBD
Short talks from CUH experts will cover:
- Overview of IBD
- Extra intestinal manifestations of IBD
- Pregnancy and IBD
- Medication and IBD
- Cognitive behavioural therapy & IBD.
- Get your Belly out (patient led)
A buffet supper will be provided, including vegetarian options. Guests with particular dietary needs are welcome to bring their own food.
