Our Trust midwife named Britain’s Midwife Of The Year

08 February 2018

Croydon Midwife Memuna Sowe was named ‘Midwife Of The Year’ last night (7 February 2018) at the annual British Journal Of Midwifery Practice Awards.

Memuna, who is Lead Midwife for Vulnerable and Marginalised Women at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust’s Rainbow Health Centre, said:

“I’m proud of this award and want to dedicate it to our fantastic team in maternity and homeless health. They work across many disciplines and have taught me so much about providing great care.”

“The vulnerable women we see are often very late in their pregnancy and, without our care, they and their child would be at great risk. We are very grateful to have the skills and resources to help them, so that they get the same maternity care as other mothers and their chances of a good future are improved.”

Ann Morling, Director of Midwifery at Croydon Health Services NHS Trust, said:

“We are overjoyed that Memuna has won. She and her team meet every challenge with skill and compassion.

“I hope she inspires other talented men and women to consider a career in maternity and to see how diverse and rewarding it can be.”

Biography:

Memuna joined the Trust as a midwife in 2013 and has worked on homeless health since 2015. In 2016 she was named Croydon’s Midwife Of The Year by our Trust. She received that award from the President of the Royal College of Nursing, Cecilia Anim CBE.

Since starting her post, Memuna has helped to improve access to care for underrepresented women throughout their pregnancy to give their children and families the best start in life.

Many of the families Memuna sees have had a very traumatic life. Memuna provides excellent care, and always goes above and beyond her call of duty - even providing families with the basic necessities, such as nappies and clothes for their baby.
