TV interviews and more for our award-winning midwives

21 February 2018

After winning the British Journal of Midwifery’s ‘Midwife Of The Year Award’ on 7 February, our midwife Memuna Sowe has appeared everywhere. Paulina Sporek has also been in the limelight after winning the ‘Midwife Achievement Award’ on 13 February at the London Maternity and Midwifery Festival.

Here we summarise their media coverage (with links to interviews) and their work - and also celebrate the whole Maternity Unit team and their partners across the community.

Memuna Sowe

On Monday evening Memuna appeared on ITV News and spoke for a few minutes about her challenging work to reach very vulnerable pregnant women, including those who are homeless. On her way to the TV studio she was also interviewed by the Evening Standard and appeared on page 26 yesterday.

The local stories about Memuna were in The Croydon Guardian and South London Press, and also a very detailed article in The Croydon Advertiser.

Her award and the great work of her and her team have helped show how diverse midwifery here can be - and how much they reach out into the community. We are very proud of her.

Paulina

Paulina Sporek has had a very innovative midwifery career, having founded and carried forward the Deaf Nest project.

Paulina's career has rarely required her to deliver babies for deaf parents herself (despite an enthusiastic headline in this Croydon Advertiser article!) but her brilliant project is helping maternity services to improve deaf parents' experience, equality of access, choice and control over maternity care. She is a valued member of our integrated maternity team.

Paulina is also raising money for that project and you can see her fundraising page here.

Maternity Unit

Teamwork and partnership is key to the success of our Maternity Unit. We are very proud of all of them and their partnerships throughout the community. Here are some facts about their achievements:

  • They deliver almost 4,000 babies each year.
  • They were rated as “Good” by the Care Quality Commission at our last specific inspection of maternity, in 2015.
  • Overall, nine out of ten women asked would recommend our maternity care to their friends and family.
  • Their homebirth team have recently been shortlisted for Team of the Year in the Royal College of Midwives Awards.
