Premier league stars bring festive joy to patients at Croydon University Hospital

22 December 2017

Players from Crystal Palace Football Club bought smiles and Christmas cheer to patients and staff as they paid a visit to Croydon University Hospital today.

Club captain, Scott Dann and fellow first team players Christian Benteke and Martin Kelly, surprised people on our elderly care and children’s wards, by delivering Crystal Palace themed gifts to those who are spending the approach to Christmas in hospital.

The three players chatted with patients and posed for photos as they made their way around the wards. A life-long palace supporter on the ACE ward said: “We don’t get to go to matches so much anymore so it’s been great to see the players close up again. My son used to work at the club and our grandchildren are all supporters too, so this visit has made my day.”

Young Palace fans on Rupert Bear Ward were ecstatic to see their idols. Jane Sithole-Sadler who works at the Trust said: “I’m so glad my grandson Ethan was able to come in wearing his Crystal Palace kit and meet one of the players he watches on TV. He went home very happy and can show off the photos to his family on Christmas Day”.

Chief Executive of Croydon Health Services NHS Trust John Goulston, said:

“It’s great that representatives from Crystal Palace Football Club have taken their time to visit the hospital and spread some joy to some of our patients as we get closer to Christmas. Their generous gifts added a special touch and I’m sure those who received them will treasure them into the future.

“Many of our staff are also fans so it was a nice gesture from them to agree to be in pictures for their friends and family to see.

“As a fan myself, I appreciate their visit too, knowing that they have taken time out of their training schedule for their busy Christmas period.”
