Service overview

The Vascular Unit at Croydon University Hospital comprises an expert multidisciplinary team of surgeons, interventional radiologists, physicians, nurses, podiatrists and vascular ultrasound imaging specialists. We treat all aspects of venous and arterial disease, and have won national recognition for our management of patients with diabetic feet and leg ulcers. We work closely with the regional vascular Unit at St George’s to provide excellent access to vascular services for the population of Croydon.

Surgical services are provided at both the Croydon University Hospital and Purley Hospital sites by Mr Ranjeet Brar (Consultant Vascular Surgeon), Mr Josh Derodra (Consultant Vascular Surgeon) and Miss Stella Vig (Consultant Vascular and General Surgeon).

We have a dedicated vascular inpatient ward (Fairfield 1) and an active Chronic Wound and Amputation Prevention Centre at Croydon University Hospital. This unit houses the Vascular Ultrasound Department, tissue viability and physiotherapy.

Our surgical team includes three Consultants, two Specialist Registrars, three Senior House Officers, three F1 junior doctors, a Wound Care Specialist Nurse (Marie Wilson). We have established links with the diabetes team and are supported by dedicated vascular nursing staff led by Sister Helen Rafferty. We also have dedicated vascular rehabilitation physiotherapists, podiatry and dietetic teams.

We perform elective and emergency surgery (including day-case procedures) and endovascular procedures (angioplasty and stenting for iliac, femoral and below-the-knee peripheral arterial disease) at Croydon University Hospital. Our principal diagnostic (CT, MRI, ultrasound), diabetes, podiatry and wound care teams are also based here.

We have a bypass graft and aneurysm surveillance program, and perform expert vascular imaging to diagnose and treat arterial disease and varicose veins. The majority of our varicose vein patients have modern endovenous ‘keyhole’ treatment, but we also offer open varicose vein procedures, predominantly performed on a day-case basis.

Patients can consult our vascular surgeons in clinic at Croydon University Hospital, Purley War Memorial Hospital, or at Parkway Health Centre, in New Addington.
