About us
Orthoses are devices which are applied externally to any part of the body to prevent or correct deformity and promote or improve function of the affected area.
We prescribe corrective insoles, shoe adaptions, footwear and bracing for the lower limb (legs and feet), upper limb (arms and hands) and the spine.
Patients with alopecia can be referred from the Dermatology Department for ordering and fitting of wigs.

What do I do if I want to change or cancel an appointment?
‘If you are unable to keep an appointment please ring and let us know by calling the above numbers giving as much notice as possible so that we can re-allocate the appointment slot to someone else. We will be happy to change your appointment if the date or time does not suit you but please give as much notice as possible’
What should I bring to my appointment?
You will have been referred to our Orthotist by your GP, consultant or other healthcare professional for an assessment. At the appointment the Orthotist will need to see the affected limb or area. For example, with foot and ankle problems it is useful to come on trousers which can be easily rolled up, shorts or a skirt and a pair of trainers or sensible shoes with a lace, Velcro or buckle fastening. For knee problems it would be useful to bring shorts. You will usually be assessed statically (sat or lay down) or dynamically (stood and/or walking)
When will I receive my orthosis?
We carry a small number of orthoses in stock which can be provided at your initial appointment. However, other items may have to be specially ordered or made for you. These items will be provided at a follow up appointment. The Orthotist will discuss this with you.
What time should I arrive for my appointment?
We would appreciate patients arriving at least 15 minutes prior to their appointment time.
Consultants
Orthotics deals with the use of specialised mechanical devices to support or supplement weakened or abnormal joints or limbs.

The orthotics service supply and fit externally applied devices and will accept written referrals from GPs for the following orthotic footwear:
- Ankle orthoses
- Ankle foot orthoses (AFOs)
- Knee ankle foot orthoses (KAFOs)
- Replacement surgical footwear
- External shoe raises and biomechanically indicated foot wear adaptions
- Piedro ‘type’ footwear for children
- KAFO, AFO, calliper adjustments/repairs
- Shoe repairs to orthopaedic footwear provided by the Trust
- Replacement of any item that has been supplied except insoles and hosiery
Other orthoses include:
- Truss/abdominal binder
- Cervical collars (not soft collars)
- Lumbar support/corset – LSO’s
- Thoracic lumber sacral orthosis – TLSO’s
Surgical stockings and hosiery
The provision of compression hosiery is managed at source within GP practices. Nursing staff can be trained in the measurement of compression hosiery and this can be arranged free of charge by hosiery manufactures:
