About us

Ophthalmology is a branch of medicine concerned with the study and treatment of diseases affecting the eyes. 

A GP or optician will refer a patient to an eye doctor, known as an ophthalmologist, for specialist treatment.

Ophthalmology by Moorfields

Eye care services are provided by Moorfields Eye Hospital NHS Foundation Trust.  Patients in Croydon will be seen by Moorfields clinicians to access specialist eye services.

Moorfields see patients at Croydon University Hospital, Purley War Memorial Hospital and very complex cases are treated at the specialist Moorfields Eye Centre based at St George’s Hospital in Tooting. 

Treatment

The eye centre provides comprehensive outpatient and diagnostic care for a range of eye conditions, as well as injections, laser treatments, contact lenses and complex eye surgery for adults and children.  Certain services are only available at the Croydon University Hospital site. 

The eye centre treats a range of conditions including:

  • Glaucoma
  • Cataracts
  • Corneal problems
  • Uveitis
  • Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)
  • Diabetic related eye conditions
  • Urgent care & eye injuries
  • Detached retinas
  • Crossed eyes
  • Urgent care 

From Thursday 1 November 2018, Moorfields Eye Centre at Croydon University Hospital has changed the way they provide urgent care. From this date all appointments will need to be booked in advance following referral from your GP or local optometrist. These referrals will be reviewed between Monday to Friday and you will be booked into an appropriate service accordingly. We are introducing this change to make sure that you are seen in the most appropriate service for your condition, in a suitable time frame.

Consultants

Moorfields provide outpatient clinics and day case surgery at Croydon University Hospital and outpatient clinics at Purley War Memorial Hospital.

Treatment

The service uses modern imaging techniques such as OCT, visual field and pachemetry tests. 

One-stop AMD service 

The AMD service (age-related macular degeneration) is offers lucentis injections.  The service is a one-stop clinic where patients are diagnosed and treated in a single appointment. 

General and urgent clinics

Patients are triaged by a nurse for an initial assessment as to whether they need to be seen by a doctor or referred back to their GP. 

Out-of-hours emergencies are seen at at St. George’s Hospital. The main eye conditions treated are:

  • Cataract
  • Age-related macular degeneration
  • Diabetic eye disease
  • Glaucoma
  • Inflammatory eye diseases
  • Diseases of the optic nerve
  • Thyroid eye disease
  • Corneal problems
  • Eyelid and tear-duct problems
  • Optical problems (such as complex contact lens fitting and low vision assessment)
  • Squint and lazy eye
  • Paediatrics

Moorfields also provides a paediatric services for children up to 16 years. These clinics are led by the orthoptists and a paediatric consultant.
