Endometriosis

Croydon University Hospital Endometriosis Centre is recognised as a Centre of Excellence providing high quality care and treatment for women with endometriosis.

Service overview

Endometriosis is a common condition where tissue that behaves like the lining of the womb (the endometrium) is found outside the womb.

The endometriosis centre is made up of a multidisciplinary team with extensive experience and knowledge in providing high quality and evidence based care for women with endometriosis.

It is one of specialist centres accredited by the British Society for Gynaecological Endoscopy (BSGE).

The team consists of two gynaecologist, both experts in the diagnosis and treatment of endometriosis, an endometriosis fellow, a colorectal surgeon, urologist, radiologist, anaesthetist (interest in pain management and a nurse specialist.

We offer a range of treatment options including pain management, hormonal treatment, and surgical treatment including laparoscopic excision of endometriosis, hysterectomy and oophorectomy depending on your individual circumstances.

Surgical treatment of severe endometriosis needs to be performed by a gynaecologist with additional skills in advanced laparoscopic procedures performed in a centre with access to other experienced surgeons (Colorectal surgeon and Urologist) with the appropriate expertise.

We understand the physical, psychological and emotional burden of chronic pelvic pain and you will have support from the endometriosis nurse specialist and chronic pain team.

We also offer a telephone advice line and there are patient self-help groups including Endometriosis UK, Acendo and HealthUnlocked.

The centre now has a fellowship programme with an active research and audit programme.

We treat women with all stages of endometriosis including mild, moderate  and Deep Infiltrating Endometriosis (DIE) forms involving the bowel and bladder.

The Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU) provides a wide range of services for women who are experiencing concerns in early pregnancy. We provide a dedicated service to women under 16 weeks gestation. The unit sees women with common symptoms such as bleeding or pain in early pregnancy. The unit also sees women who have had previous early pregnancy complications such as recurrent miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and molar pregnancy.

The Early Pregnancy Unit is staffed by a dedicated team of mixed professionals. The unit is lead by a consultant Gynaecologist with specialist training in scanning and managing early pregnancy complications.

Most services are nurse delivered and the team is managed by a lead nurse who is dual trained in midwifery as well as general nursing. Ultrasound scans are performed by doctors, nurses and sonographers.

We treat:

  • Threatened Miscarriages

  • Recurrent Miscarriages

Colposcopy

The service investigates women with abnormal results following a smear test. In the vast majority of cases a direct referral from a GP is not required as referrals are  made directly from South West London Pathology (SWLP).

Treatment

The service investigates women with abnormal results following a smear test and those who have signs and symptoms of pre-cancerous abnormalities in the lower genital tract. They provide treatments under a local anaesthetic to remove or destroy the abnormal area.

The service also performs smear tests, particularly on women who have had cervical abnormalities or pre-cancerous changes, and women from whom there are difficulties obtaining a smear. This may include biopsies (small tissue samples) from the lower genital tract under local anaesthetic and minor procedures such as coil fittings.
